API: Views, Comments, Links, and Likes Counts

Magma collects a variety of statistics from across the web. Our goal is to give an in-depth look at the viral trends of videos. For us to make this possible, there are four metrics we count: views, comments, likes, and links.

Definitions

  • Views are the view count metrics given by the source site for a video.
  • Comments are the count of total comments given on a source site and Magma for a video instance.
  • Links are the given number of publishers identified having embedded or linked to a video instance.
  • Likes are the number of positive reviews given to a video instance by a source or publisher.

Views

Views are the view count metrics given by the source site for a video instance. Some sources do not publish this information, therefore their view counts will be 0.

These numbers will only come from the video instance source, such as YouTube, Vimeo.

Comments

Comments are the total number of comments given for a video instance. This number is a sum of all known places a video has been embedded or linked.

The sum of these is collected from the video instance source, Reddit, StumbleUpon, and Magma comments. More sources and publishers will be added soon and announced in the Magma API Changelog.

Links

Links a given number of known places a video has been embedded or mentioned. This information is based on a few various sources to capture an understanding of blogs and websites that mention a video instance.

Likes

Likes are the positive ratings given for a video, and is the sum of all known instances of ratings. While Magma calls this a like, the terminology may also be known as favorites, ratings, stars, Diggs, and upvotes.

The sum of these is collected from the video instance source, Digg, Reddit, Videosift, and Magma. More sources and publishers will be added soon and announced in the Magma API Changelog.
